Does acupuncture hurt?

Updated: Dec 2, 2019

Acupuncture tends to be a very relaxing and gentle experience for most people. With insertion of a needle, most people for nothing at all. If they do feel something, it is usually described as a mild pinch that dissipates immediately.

The needles used are sterile and are a mere fraction of a millimeter wide, about the width of a couple human hairs!

Acupuncturists are trained to know when acupuncture is safe and when it is unsafe. They know where to insert needles, and more importantly where NOT to insert needles!

A typical acupuncture treatment involves lying flat on a comfortable therapy table. Needles are gently inserted and the patient lies with relaxing music and dimmed lights for 20 minutes or more. The needles are then removed and the patient is free to go.

Symptomatic improvement can sometimes occur with a single treatment, but often requires regular sessions for a period of weeks or months in order to achieve a sustained improvement. This depends on several things, including the patient’s condition, all of which can be discussed with your acupuncturist.
